An Indie Dev’s Guide to Google Search Console

If you’re like most indie developers, you’ve probably launched your website, devlog, or documentation and done the basics: you added Google Analytics (or a privacy-friendly alternative) and called it a day.

You check your dashboard and see: “Awesome, 20 visits! Oh wait… 18 are from my phone and the other 2 are my mom.”

Analytics is great at telling you what is happening: how many people enter, where they come from, and what pages they read. But for a developer trying to grow a project, it misses the most critical question: What does Google actually think of my website?

Think of Google Search Console (GSC) as the “engine room” of your website, straight from Google’s perspective. Let’s break down the absolute basics, plus a couple of easy hacks to multiply your traffic without writing new posts.


Why do I need this if I already have Analytics?

If Google Analytics is the bouncer at the door counting who comes in, Search Console is the architect telling you if the front door is jammed, if the sign outside is readable, and what exact address people typed into their GPS to find you.

For indie devs, GSC is vital for three main reasons:

  1. Real Visibility: It tells you if Google even knows you exist.
  2. The Magic Words (Queries): It reveals the exact search terms people are typing to find your content.
  3. Health Alerts: It warns you if there’s a technical error preventing your pages from being indexed.

The Engine Room: The 2 Metrics That Matter

GSC has a lot of sections you can safely ignore on day one. Go straight to the Performance Report. Don’t obsess over “Average CTR” or “Average Position” just yet. Focus on these two:

  • Clicks: The actual visits Google sent your way.
  • Impressions: How many times your site appeared in search results, even if nobody clicked.

The “Zero Clicks” Goldmine: 2 Hacks to Steal Traffic

Here is where GSC feels like magic. Once you have some data, you might notice a page with 500 Impressions but 0 Clicks.

Your first thought? “My post failed.” Reality? “You hit a goldmine, but your frontend (the title) is wrong.”

Here is how to fix it using two real-world indie dev scenarios.

Hack 1: Fix the “Search Intent Mismatch”

Imagine you wrote a great tutorial titled “How to Migrate Away from X”. You check GSC and see 200 impressions for the query "migrate X to Y", but zero clicks.

Why? Because the person typing that wants to move to a specific platform, but your post title doesn’t specify which one. Google got confused, showed your post to the wrong crowd, and they didn’t click.

The Fix: Don’t rewrite the article! Just change your <title> tag (your H1) to match what your actual audience is searching for. Change it to: “How to Migrate from X to Y”. Boom. Next time it appears, the right people will click.

Hack 2: Pluck the “Low-Hanging Fruit”

Let’s say you have a post about “Version Control for Game Devs”. You check your GSC Queries and notice 40 impressions for a hyper-specific search: "how to version control heavy audio files and strings".

Your post talks about Git and images, but barely mentions audio. Google thinks you might be the answer, but isn’t sure.

The Fix: Go to your post and organically add a sentence addressing that exact query. Mention .wav or .ogg files and localization strings. You just gave Google exactly what it was looking for, and your post will likely shoot to the top for that specific search.


⚠️ The Golden Rule of Updating Old Posts

When you go back to update a title or add a paragraph to grab these new clicks, remember this absolute rule:

NEVER change the URL (the .md filename on Jekyll or permalink).

If you change the URL, you break any existing links out there on the internet (Reddit, LinkedIn, Twitter), and Google will treat it as a brand new page, wiping out all the trust you’ve built. Change the title, change the text, but leave the URL alone.

Want Google to notice your changes today? Copy your URL, paste it into the top search bar in Search Console, and click “Request Indexing”. You are forcing Google’s bots to read your new, optimized title right now instead of waiting weeks.


Your Action Item for Today

GSC is not retroactive. It only starts collecting data the day you set it up. Here is your mission to get your “engine room” running:

1. Set it up (If you haven’t already)

  • Go to Google Search Console.
  • Click “Add Property” and enter your domain.
  • Verify ownership (usually by adding a quick TXT record to your DNS settings).

2. Find the Real Data Wait a few days for the data to populate, then log back in. By default, GSC drops you on the “Overview” page. Don’t stay there. Look at the left sidebar menu. It usually goes Overview > Insights > Performance. Click on Performance (the third option).

3. Read the Big Four The screen will change to show a large graph. Right above that graph, you will see four big colored cards. These are your vital signs:

  • Total clicks (Blue): Real visits from Google.
  • Total impressions (Purple): How many times you appeared in searches.
  • Average CTR (Green): The percentage of people who actually clicked.
  • Average position (Orange): Your average ranking spot.

For now, ignore the green and orange. Focus on the purple to see if Google is testing your content, and the blue to see if your titles are converting.
